Ash had finished reviewing the command center's morning notes when a gentle chime sounded at the entrance.
A small white-and-orange delivery droid rolled into view on its wheels. Two bright eyes blinked above the delivery hatch.
“Correspondence from Bishop,” announced the Droid Delivery Service.
Ash placed his notes neatly beside the console and accepted the envelope. DDS waited patiently, leaving room for him to decide what came next.
Bishop's letter described a quiet field station, a beautiful sunrise and a small discovery that had made the day better. At the end, he asked how Ash's latest trip had gone.
Ash smiled. There was no need to answer immediately. He read the letter once more, then set it somewhere safe.
Later, when the command center was settled, he opened a fresh page.
“Dear Bishop…”
Across the room, DDS rested with sleepy eyes. Off duty did not mean far away. Whenever Ash chose to send his reply, the little delivery droid would be ready.
